This section of the site will list things we or previous visitors have found of interest to do whilst staying at Idris Heights, so check back often as this section will be updated on a regular basis.
The Mach Loop
The Mach Loop is a set of valleys, situated between Dolgellau in the north, and Machynlleth in the south (and from which the Mach Loop gets its name), which are regularly used for low level flight training, with flying as low as 250 feet (76 metres) from the nearest terrain.
This is a must visit destination, if this is your thing, that is approx 17 miles (half an hour) from Idris Heights.
Please be aware that it is not guaranteed you will see any action when visiting, it is very hit or miss but if you do see any training taking place it is beyond words!
Click here to view the RAF operational low flying training timetable which lists the times and days that training flights are scheduled to possibly take place (updated weekly).
If you decide to visit please be respectful of the country code and treat all farm land etc with respect and please take your rubbish home with you, this is stunning countryside so let’s leave it that way.
We would recommend using the postcode LL36 9AJ this will take you to a parking area for the “Cad West” viewing area which is featured in the video below.
If taking little ones ear defenders may wish to be considered as the volume on the video below does not do the noise justice at all, these aircraft are VERY loud!
This video will give you an idea of what to expect if you get lucky and visit on a training day.
